Almost a decade ago, doping of aluminium nitride (AlN) by rare earth metals has been experimentally introduced using scandium (Sc) to increase the moderate piezoelectric properties of pure AlN. In this PhD thesis, the potential of yttrium and other alterative AlN dopants for applications in bulk acoustic wave (BAW) devices will be investigated with a focus on improving key properties like piezoelectric coefficients and electromechanical coupling. The AlXN thin films will be deposited using an industry type sputtering system and BAW devices fabricated in state of the art clean room facilities at ISAS / TU Wien. Qualifications

Several of our research topics in our #neurosens group involve the use of #microfabrication techniques. Microfabrication and micropatterning are fields of study in which methods are developed to manufacture materials, or pattern materials on a micrometric scale (i.e., below 100 microns in at least one dimension). Lithography is a common method used in micropatterning. In this nice optical image, you can see our brand new #zig -zag #pattern. The minimum dimension is 5 um and each area is 200x400um2! Hi Scicommunity :) I'm Valerie (@valeriemarch), a first year MSc student in 'Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Life Sciences'. I did a BSc in Biochemistry and Genetics and then an honours in Molecular and Cell Biology. I'm currently studying in Paris, but I'm from Cape Town South Africa, so a lot of my content involves exploring this new city! It's also an awesome environment to be in because there is a rich science culture embedded in the city. I've done research in contraceptives and HIV and will start an internship in tissue engineering and microfluidics in Feb next year. Basically, I'll be using a nifty polymer to create an environment in which to grow tumours to better understand how they form, and potentially use them for drug screening. I love being on the bench and look forward to a career using innovative and interdisciplinary techniques towards solving biological problems especially towards alleviating the burden of disease. After my MSc, I plan to go onto do a PhD, I'm still working on narrowing down in what... Right now I'm super keen on exploring neuroscience, stem cells, phage therapy, and synthetic biology(see my problem?). You see much more of this confusion on my twitter. Apart from science I'm super passionate about justice, equality, and representation, both in STEM and the world. And FOOD. I also 100% believe in being kind to oneself (and doing your best to be kind to the Earth!). Added to list of failed silicon etching experiments! These golden edges were supposed to be nice small pyramids but a bad recipie under-etched the silicon and over-etched the silica (glass) protective layer causing these interesting lattices! 🔍🔬🔎 Dark field - 5x magnification.

The nanofabrication cleanroom is a definite no hang zone. We have 6000 square feet of Class 100 fab rooms. That means per square foot you will find less than 100 particles greater than half a micron in size. The entire air volume in the room I am now in will cycle more than once by the time you finish reading this. This is Takuya Miyazawa, a Microfabrication Specialist. What does he do exactly? Well, for example, he caters his expertise when #OIST researchers would want to cover their sample with thin film that is 1/1,000,000 mm thick (or thin!). His decision to join OIST didn't take too long when he was first invited to the university. He was blown away by its campus facility and environment, which was extremely unique and distinct compared to most of other Japanese universities. Then a postdoc scholar in Astrophysics at the time, he foresaw OIST as a place to challenge his scientific curiosity while applying his background knowledge and experience. Researchers from the University of Minnesota used a custom-built 3D printer to print light receptors on a hemispherical glass dome for the first time. “We have a long way to go to routinely print active electronics reliably, but our 3D printed semiconductors are now starting to show that they could potentially rival the efficiency of semiconducting devices fabricated in microfabrication facilities,” said Michael McAlpine, a co-author of the study published in Advanced Materials. A bright field image of some underdeveloped photoresist patterns (see dark field images two posts back) that displays some good old thin film interference! The space between the thicker lines is suppose to be empty but instead there are very thin films left behind that reflect various colors of the incident white light back into the camera. The wavelength of the colors reflected is proportional to the thickness of the film, meaning those in between areas are only a few hundreds of nanometers thick.

Just a regular ole engineer and his creations. As a biosensor engineer you really get to work at the intersection of science and technology. I get to apply my training I received as an undergraduate while learning foundational theory that governs physics & mechanical properties to explore new topics and develop completely novel and revolutionary technology by bridging technological gaps that limit the biology & medical world. The second pic is my second device: a high throughout, high efficiency DNA conjugation screening platform. The third is an image obtained for preliminary data while prototyping the device during the early stages.
