Added to list of failed silicon etching experiments! These golden edges were supposed to be nice small pyramids but a bad recipie under-etched the silicon and over-etched the silica (glass) protective layer causing these interesting lattices! 🔍🔬🔎 Dark field - 5x magnification.

The nanofabrication cleanroom is a definite no hang zone. We have 6000 square feet of Class 100 fab rooms. That means per square foot you will find less than 100 particles greater than half a micron in size. The entire air volume in the room I am now in will cycle more than once by the time you finish reading this. This is Takuya Miyazawa, a Microfabrication Specialist. What does he do exactly? Well, for example, he caters his expertise when #OIST researchers would want to cover their sample with thin film that is 1/1,000,000 mm thick (or thin!). His decision to join OIST didn't take too long when he was first invited to the university. He was blown away by its campus facility and environment, which was extremely unique and distinct compared to most of other Japanese universities. Then a postdoc scholar in Astrophysics at the time, he foresaw OIST as a place to challenge his scientific curiosity while applying his background knowledge and experience. A bright field image of some underdeveloped photoresist patterns (see dark field images two posts back) that displays some good old thin film interference! The space between the thicker lines is suppose to be empty but instead there are very thin films left behind that reflect various colors of the incident white light back into the camera. The wavelength of the colors reflected is proportional to the thickness of the film, meaning those in between areas are only a few hundreds of nanometers thick.

I get to apply my training I received as an undergraduate while learning foundational theory that governs physics & mechanical properties to explore new topics and develop completely novel and revolutionary technology by bridging technological gaps that limit the biology & medical world. The second pic is my second device: a high throughout, high efficiency DNA conjugation screening platform. The third is an image obtained for preliminary data while prototyping the device during the early stages. The second pic is my second device: a high throughout, high efficiency DNA conjugation screening platform. The third is an image obtained for preliminary data while prototyping the device during the early stages. It shows microdroplets (each serving as an independent bioreactor and thus each constitutes a separate experiment) housing Bacillus subtilis bacterial cells. .

Nanogap electrodes, basically pairs of electrodes with a nanometer-sized gap between them, are attracting attention as scaffolds to study, sense, or harness molecules, the smallest stable structures found in nature. Dark field image of some photoresist patterns, scale bar = 50 μm = 0.05 mm. They're supposed to be continuous stripes along a cm long chip but around the edges, there are non uniformities in the pattern leading to cool structures like this, especially in dark field. It looks a little like a chain-y gold watch!

Time’s up ! Here are the ⚡️Mystery machine⚡️’s missing parts. And the answer (🔙 previous post). These steel parts are a couple of dies used in a metal swaging machine aka radial (cold) forging. These ones were used to make very specific surgical needles. The machine featured in my previous post is the smaller metal swaging machine ever made by the guys at the Besançon factory (it closed in the early 2000s). Пару постов назад я просила вас угадать, почему люблю шестиугольники. Любовь эта — профдеформация, потому что физики склонны видеть красоту в симметрии. Не столько в геометрическом её смысле, сколько в более абстрактном. Удачно сформулированные законы физики так или иначе симметричны, а всё самое интересное происходит тогда, когда симметрия нарушается. Сложно найти более привлекательный в этом смысле объект для изучения, чем графен. Кристалл толщиной в один атом, образованный шестиугольниками из атомов углерода. Один химический элемент, простая структура и на удивление сложная физика. Я не буду пересказывать содержание статьи из Википедии на эту тему, но очень советую сходить почитать для общего развития. 5 лет в этой теме, и начинаешь либо любить, либо люто ненавидеть эти шестиугольники. Самое удивительное в этой теме то, что самый чистый графен (напоминаю, толщина один (!) атом) получается с помощью скотча. Берём кусочек высокоориентированного пиролитического графита, расслаиваем его скотчем до прозрачности, а потом отпечатываем прозрачные участки на подложке. На фотографии – часть этого процесса. Фактически за эту идею (и последовавшие за ней результаты) Андрей Гейм и Константин Новосёлов получили Нобелевскую премию по физике в 2010 году. Ровно в это же время я начала учёбу в аспирантуре. Экспериментальная физика выглядит очень романтично и остроумно в книжках и нобелевских лекциях. Но это ещё и месяцы работы до ночи и без выходных, без каких-то гарантий результата. В моём случае это были километры скотча, месяцы за микроскопом, установкой для электронно-лучевой литографии и в чистой комнате (типичная среда для производства нано- и микроэлектроники) и много чего другого. Мне очень повезло с результатами, которые можно было опубликовать и защитить заветный титул из трёх буковок. Но очень не повезло с научным руководителем.
