When your patient gives you the side-eye👀
...
Fun fact- goats have rectangular pupils! This allows them to have greater peripheral vision - around 320 degrees - which is important for prey species. 🐐

Common blood group in canine and feline.
.
Over 13 canine blood groups have been described. Eight DEA (dog erythrocyte antigen) types are recognized as international standards.Of these DEA types, DEA 4 and DEA 6 appear on the red blood cells of ~98% of dogs. Dogs with only DEA 4 or DEA 6 can thus serve as blood donors for the majority of the canine population. Any of these DEA types may stimulate an immune response in a recipient of a blood transfusion, but reactions to DEA 1.1+ are the most severe.

Dogs that are DEA 1.1 positive (33 to 45% of the population) are universal recipients - that is, they can receive blood of any type without expectation of a life-threatening hemolytic transfusion reaction. Dogs that are DEA 1.1 negative are universal donors. Blood from DEA 1.1 positive dogs should never be transfused into DEA 1.1 negative dogs. If it is the dog's first transfusion the red cells transfused will have a shortened life due to the formation of alloantibodies to the cells themselves and the animal will forever be sensitized to DEA 1.1 positive blood. If it is a second such transfusion, life-threatening conditions will follow within hours. In addition, these alloantibodies will be present in a female dog's milk (colostrum) and adversely affect the health of DEA 1.1 negative puppies.

Other than DEA blood types, Dal is another blood type commonly known in dogs.

I'm so jazzed about this! Concerned people from the village nearby brought this Sulawesi masked owl in to the clinic today. I got to perform the full physical examination and give him a vitamin injection (of course with the supervision of one of the lovely vets here). He's now being monitored for the next while before being released back into the wild! 🦉❤️🦉

🐾 WORK EXPERIENCE: PART 1 🐾
-
So, from the background reading you’ve done, the open days you’ve attended, and upon assessing finances, you’ve decided you’d like to apply to veterinary medicine.
-
Your number one priority now should be work experience. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that you can read all the books, magazines, newspapers you want. You can go to impressive placements and see amazing things. BUT! If you do not get sufficient work experience, the vet schools couldn’t care less, and it now makes sense why. You’re better knowing the basics well, because it’s their job to teach you anything more.
-
Almost all vet schools tend to ask for approx. 4 weeks, but I went on the understanding that if I meet the highest requirements that any of the vet schools offer, that I’m safe for the rest. For the UK vet schools, this is Liverpool.
-
They require:
🔘 80 hours in AT LEAST 2 different clinical practices (ideally 1 small animal and 1 large).
🔘 120 hours of animal husbandry. This is to include AT LEAST 2 of the following: Dogs/Cats, Equine, Farm Animal.
-
For each placement, only a maximum of 40 hours can count towards the total. This means you need to have done AT LEAST 5 different placements, and only the last 18 months counts for many places.
-
Work experience is what makes you competitive. I had 5 weeks for both unsuccessful applications, and 12 weeks for my successful one!
-
My main point from this is: Less isn’t more when it comes to work experience! Get as much as you can!
-
This can all seem a bit overwhelming and complicated, but I’ll put a simplified table into a Google Drive that I’ll make available to you all. Unfortunately, this will only apply to English vet schools as they are the ones I know about, but if you need any support in applying to vet schools elsewhere, don’t hesitate to ask!
-
In part 2, I’ll cover what to get out of work experience, what to bring, what to expect etc., so don’t forget to message me with any of your questions!

High quality hay is essential for livestock health. One of the most critical factors in producing quality hay is timing, which includes the stage of plant growth and weather conditions. The nutrient value is much higher in earlier stages (starches, proteins and minerals). As the plants mature, their lignin content increases. Some farmers aim for up to four cuttings a season which will also influence their timing. It takes about three days of good weather to cure hay, which can be a challenge especially for the first cut. Baling hay that is too moist can cause mold or even barn fires as it decomposes. It is generally baled with a moisture content between 15-18 percent. Once baled, it should be taken out of the field and covered up quickly so it doesn’t absorb moisture from the ground or get rained on. —————————————————————————— #hayfarm #hayfarming #farming101 #farm #hay #hayfacts #cuttinghay #hayfields #hayseason #hayseason2019 #vetstudent #agriculture #vetmed #veterinarymedicine #farming #farmvet #vet #balinghay #cuttinghay #hayfield #livestock #horse #painthorse #countrygirl #cowgirl #countrylife #countryvet #countrygirlforlife #caughtupinthecountry #👩🏻‍🌾 #🐴
