“Do not allow your fire to go out, spark by irreplaceable spark in the hopeless swamps of the not-quite, the not-yet, and the not at all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish in lonely frustration for the life you deserved and have never been able to reach.”

REMEMBER: “The world you desire can be won. It exists. It is real. It is possible. It is yours.”

This is NOT my typical “look at how adorable my parrots are” instagram cute post. It is not at all pretty, so please feel you can leave the post at will.
Solomon, my 19 year old SI Eclectus has had a more than four month #illness with a #lame right foot. He was spending much of the time on the bottom of the cage at the outset, he could not bear weight, held the hip and knee in flexion, the right foot intoed, the toes and foot were flaccid, unable to perch or groom, could barely get out of his waste, foot was painful, swollen, the skin discolored yellow. Nearly every tail feather and flight feather were broken using them for support and balance. Many of his barbs were stripped and worn. The left pinion had a fracture, presumably from a fall off the perch.
Solomon went into the travel cage with a very low perch, flat surfaces were improvised in the cage as he could not perch.
At the discovery of the illness, unbeknownst to me until 2 1/2 months later, Solomon was self-excoriating his LEFT leg, down to the muscle on the shin, which never showed any of the inflammation on the right foot.
Medications were antibiotics for more than two months- baytril, later clavamox AND baytril, then clavamox only. One month of metacam, a short course of bupernorphine; topical getamicin oph drops, antibiotic scrubs, saline dressings, Silvadine ointment, at times honey used in the dressings.
Abnormal lab: WBC 25,000, uric acid 10.5, ast 370, CPK sl elevated, low albumin.
Dressing changes, soaks, medication administration, vets visits and physical therapy consumed some time Of every day for the four months of the illness. “Hockey player” thick shin guards were maintained on both shins to limit his self-muti

My vet probed and irrigated a hard particle from the dorsum of the foot in late March. In late May, the hock had a feel of exposed bone?, after a long epsoms salt soak, the much larger stony particle actually fell out of the foot while applying a dressing. This appears to be a stone of sorts, it has not been analyzed.
I feel that this is articular gout, the vet did not voice an opinion that matched.
If anyone has any wisdom, please post a comment or suggestio

Learned a lot, laughed a lot, but didn’t sleep a lot. Internal medicine was exhausting, but makes me even more excited to be a dogtor!!! These ladies made this rotation one I’ll always look back on and be thankful for 💜

If you ever can’t find me, you know what barn I’ll be in! 🐽

I love them all, but pigs might always be my favorites. 🐷 Their intelligence makes them love to play and always fun to hang out and work with. It’s even just a blast when scraping out and giving them fresh bedding - every shoe and shovel and bag of shavings is exciting and something new to play with!

I waved goodbye (reluctantly) to my month on the Internal Medicine service today. One of the highlights - Eevee (!!!) who underwent a procedure to reconstruct her wonky ureter. I’ll miss the thoughtful & supportive learning environment, the people, and of course Eevee and the patients like her. Time to move on... anesthesia here I come!

🥰 Today started out great! I came into the office to find a THANK YOU note from a grateful owner. •
•
✅ TIP: Keep a folder of all the cards, drawings, pictures, and gifts you get as a #veterinarian •
•
It is good to refer to when you need a pick me up! •

What has made your day a little brighter recently?

Hello, Mexico! 🇲🇽
.
I am lucky enough to be participating in MARVET, a program that focuses on conservation medicine of aquatic animals🐬🦈🐢, for 2 weeks. After those two weeks are up I'll be exploring the area for an additional week and soaking up as many cultural experiences as I can!
.
Have you participated in MARVET or visited Quintana Roo? What was your favorite experience? What are your must dos?

Final reflection on my 2nd surgery service trip to Thailand. 🇹🇭 .
.
.
Across 5 surgery days, we successfully worked with over 100 animals. Though tired and sore after each surgery day, we came back the next day with the same energy and passion for what we came to do here. After this trip, I feel competent. I feel empowered. I feel gratitude for all the people involved. I feel pride for everything we accomplished. I feel honored to have the trust of these communities. Here’s hoping this trip reaches it’s 20th anniversary in another 10 years and here’s to veterinary schools that encourage students to work abroad and use the privilege of their veterinary education around the world!

Its a beautiful thing when a career and a passion come together ...
As long as there are animals, there will be a need for veterinarians to care for them. My 5 tips and tricks about blood transfusion with 🐄! Vets- How do you do it? ⛑️ (It is not all by the book 🙃 ) .
1️⃣ Donor: Big strong cow, not pregnant, calm and with beautiful milk veins. I attach legs and don't sedate.
2️⃣ I like to use human blood transfusion bags. Clean, CPDA in the bag, easy to use. No messing with open bottle or bucket of blood. Heaven!
3️⃣ I like to get blood from milk vein. Because I can fill up to 5 bags of blood in the same time + gravitation speeds the process!
4️⃣ Flush your perfusion set with anticoagulant.
5️⃣ Recipient : Place a catheter in jugular vein. If you use a needle, than you can't check between transfusion if you are still good in the vein.
.
📸: Rupture of artery between calving. Video is day later. Already eating and feeling more alive. . 👉@jonas_thewildest_vet tnx for extra hands on the case! (Stitching ruptured vagina - #couplegoals 🤦)

Living, breathing, chasing The Dream. T-1 yr 💪🏼✨

Living, breathing, chasing The Dream. T-1 yr 💪🏼✨

🐾 A stethoscope 👩🏼‍⚕️ was something that I wouldn’t let myself have until I reached my goal of getting into vet school. Once it finally happened, my friends bought this one for me together, and put the words “Listen With Love” on the tubing. I could not have been more grateful for their gift and the love behind it - I couldn’t wait to listen to patients with love.

As I wait eagerly for school to start, I have started to bring it to work for monitoring anesthesia patients. My coworker noticed the phrase on the tubing and her immediate thought was that it was a lovely reminder to listen to clients with love when interactions are difficult.

I have a special hook in my office for hanging up my stethoscope now, and I admit I look at it every day lately 😅 but I think I’ll look at it every day to come and remember these lessons, to #ListenWithLove to my patients AND their owners, and my wonderful colleagues as well.

Also, kleiner Appell an alle Hundebesitzer:
Bitte leint eure Hunde doch einfach an oder haltet sie bei euch in der Nähe. Solche Bilder müssen nämlich nicht sein, zumal dieses Kitz noch echt “Glück” gehabt hat und mit dem Leben davonkam.
Jetzt befindet es sich in einer Kitzrettungsstelle und ist auf dem Weg der Besserung.
Danke an meine Kommilitonin und Kollegin @razz_berrii , welche mir diese Bilder zur Verfügung stellte 😊
