This is my mom. A 60 year old living a life like a 30 year old. 2019 is going to be a special (and potentially difficult) year for me where I need to figure out a few important transitions. But for her, I want to spend a year being with her as the biggest birthday gift for her.
She was very pretty when she was young, which can be proved from how I look. 😂 She was also very smart. She taught in school for 40 years and has students across the globe. I inherited some of her high IQ too. However, only in recent years did I discover that her wisdom is way above the books. Through her lifetime stories filled with the joys and sadness, the hopes and despair, the sickness and unfortunateness, she educated me into a better human being, and a happier individual.
What is a happy life? From her experience, it is to stay peaceful with those we can’t change in our lives. From every person, or situation, or environment that you dislike, you will be able to see the homework required to become a better yourself. Accept the reality, change yourself, and do not try to change others.
One of my top favorites is reading books, building a framework/perspective around the knowledge learned, and then practicing the framework and consolidating the perspective via travels. I graduated from Fudan and came to America in 2007, merely wanting to work at Microsoft. I called it the computer science student's American dream. 11 years passed since that moment I landed on American soil. Each year I spent some time visiting different parts of the country and getting to see things that are different from what TV says. It feels refreshing to step out of the Silicon Valley bubble.
Life is short. Gonna enjoy it while we can. 😆 😂
Today, another one just got ✔️💯 off my todo list - I have been thinking of visiting all of the Windows desktop backgrounds in person. I believe this scenery is used in Windows 7.
Visiting the Instagram HQ in New York. It’s been almost three years since I left Instagram. Happy to see some great friends / coworkers who moved from the Bay Area to New York. Apparently Instagram is the most successful company I chose in my career and am super proud to be part of it, however more importantly, I was able to work with the best people among the best. The experience at Instagram rendered a few important life choices and made who I am today.
